We just got back from a trip to Los Angeles/Las Vegas this past weekend. We went up for the trade show and to cruise for just a bit. My first day there, we hit up S&M and talked story with Dylan and McKinney for a bit. We ended up looking through some of the private collection which they just recently started acquiring.

They also have Beringers original prototype . . .

I also got a chance to see the first run of T-1’s Garret Byrnes frames which are being made in the Building.

Here’s McKinney and I partaking in some frosty beverages upstairs before heading out to Mother’s Tavern in Sunset Beach. A word of warning, if you have a peanut allergy, be careful. This is the real deal with peanut shells all over the floor. I will say, however, that this place has THE absolute coldest beer on tap I have ever had in my life! A great atmosphere and live music most nights.

Dennis flew in on Sunday night and we went straight from the airport to my friends house in Long Beach for an impromptu BBQ. You’d be surprised at how many heads currently call Long Beach home. During the course of the night a gang of cool cats showed up including Chicago transplant Kevin Porter and Chad Johnston.

Off to Vegas Monday night for the trade show. On the way into town, the lightning was outrageous. For those of you who know us, we normally rent a boat and cruise Lake Mead on Tuesday but with the weather like it was . . . that wasn’t going to happen. There’s no way I’m sitting on an aluminum pontoon boat in the middle of a lake with all that going on. Luckily, Dennis and I are ok with changing plans and there’s no shortage of outlets for us to do so. We ended up at a bar in Harrah’s with some big uns.

This ended up hooking up with the Primo guys and off to the dollar bar at Casino Royale. Due to national decency standards, I can’t go into that though.

Next night, Dennis wanted to rest. Bigs had driven up earlier that day so he and I cruised around and walked about 20 miles . . . give or take. We must’ve checked out 6 different places before we settled on Double Down Saloon. Birthplace of the Bacon Martini and home of Ass Juice . . . you read that right.

Thursday night brought us to the Nora Cup awards. I’m sure by now, everyone has heard who won what so I won’t bore you with details. Needless to say, Reez at Kink/Blackout was very happy. And we got to see Logan for a bit.

We ended up at the Hard Rock like everyone else and our boy Dave from Sparky’s was making the moves on one of the dancers there.

All in all, it was a great trip. Yes, we did get some business done which is the whole reason we were there in the first place. But we did have fun. I’ll see if I can get Dennis to post up some more shots later.

Y'all ready for 'dis? We will be running Streets Of Madness just like last year. Everybody shows up at 8:00am on February 26th at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park. May is turning out to be pretty good for some of our guys in Hawaii. Brandon Fugett turned 21 and got to drink his first legal at Hooters at 12:01am. For those that aren't in the know, that's him in the middle.

A couple of hours later we start getting emails about his picture being in Dig BMX #76. Rob Dolecki was in town a while back and liked what we were doing so showed us some love. Plus he caught an excellent shot of Brandon doing a lookback fakie. Nice.

Marty finally got in the first portion of his electric bikes and is just about ready to start riding them all over Waikiki. And whatever you might say about him, Jimbo just met the woman of his dreams . . .

Only 50 frames were made, since Hawaii is the 50th state, it made sense at some point to do just 50. Available in clear coat with different sizes to choose from. The Hawaii LTF features a Tiki engraved headtube with it's mouth as a bottle opener. Drinking just got that much cooler, I mean BMX just got that much cooler. The frame will be $420*, straight up, or HIGH depending on how you look at it. United in Hawaii Part 2

So, last night we had the little BBQ at BIKEFACTORY Waipio with the boys from United Bike Co. I'm pretty sure that a good time was had by all. I know I got a little loose.

We even brought out Jeff's trusty old Hutch Trickstar for Ian to play around on. Age is just a number . . . that bike is over 20 years old!

The boys are filming for their upcoming video "This Is United". That means we should have a bit of Hawaii in the video. Nice. I can't wait to see footage of Corey Martinez drifting the Mod!

Big thanks to Azalea for taking so many great shots and sending these to me. I'm gonna hit up her site and steal some more and post them here a little later on.

By the way, I know there are quite a few people out there that wanted to come out but couldn't make it to Waipio. Well, we're bringing the party to Honolulu next Sunday at 6:00pm. 740 Ala Moana Blvd. See you there!

duane picked me up at LAX and found q-tip's wallet on el segundo, no cash in it though. went to ruben's new haus (dope) and bbq til way too late, met dis funny hombre luis and jus talking shit wit him and some gortitas. new mexican word i learned. got alcohol poisoning da next morning, puked like 20 times, all da way to jap's cove.(yup, san pedro's got a place called dat.) drove to vegas, too much drinking. met up with marty. marlo met up wit us da next day. sean from maui too. bigs showed up, like 5 am, knocking on da door for eva. partied and werked fo 3 dayz. all good.

Saw a bunch of boyz i neva seen in a long time. keith treanor, troy mcmurray, fids and da bes pistol pete. NORA cup party was fun. too bad a lot of bitching from all the new kids, kinda ruined it fo some. but fuck um, dey goin quit in a couple minutes anyway. del taco and in-n-out fucked my stomach da whole time, tasty but...

we did get to ride muppet show in redondo area, it's a old skool bank to wall, back in the freestylin' mag dayz. i probably forgot more info but, oh well...

We are premiering the hot new DVD from Fit Bike Co., "Stay Fit" this Saturday night at BIKEFACTORY Waipio. As you all know, a lot of the Fit team has left since the completion of this flic so this will be the last DVD from them including Chase Hawk, Dakota Roche, Chase Dehart, Russ Barone, Trey Jones and Rob-O Morales. I'm not sure if I'll have DVD's available for sale but we will be taking preorders.
This will be an evening of wine, women and song . . . or at least beer, BBQ and bikes. Same basic game as last time . . . be here about 7:30pm and I'll start the flic at 8:30. OLD SCHOOL is right!

This past weekend I got invited to the 2nd Annual Team Safari Cycles BMX Reunion. This time it was combined with Team Eki. For those of you who don't know, there were five entities supporting the early days of BMX in Hawaii including McCully Bicycle, The Bike Shop and The Great Outdoors. Safari Cycles and Eki Cyclery are on that list. BMX was huge in Hawaii back in the late-70's and early-80's and these are just a handful of the people involved.

Now I never personally rode for any of these teams. In fact, all of my BMX racing was when I lived in Southern California. The closest I got to a sponsorship from any of these shops was a Profile sticker pack from Jimmy T. With that being said, it was an honor to be invited to hang out with these cats and swap stories. It's amazing the wealth of talent that came out of these islands and the hurt that some of these guys put on the mainland riders.

They have been meeting at Waimalu courts across Dave's ice cream and Grace's every Sunday. So if you have the urge to bicycle boogie lube those rotors, grease that chain and head over there around 5ish. No bullshit just good times.

San Pedro - Vegas Pilgrimage

This will be kind of an odd post. Since there are 9 different guys associated with this trip at one point or another, we are still waiting on pictures and personal stories so check back frequently over the next few days as more and more gets added to this one.
Although I did get to San Pedro(pronounced /sænˈpiːdroʊ/) ahead of time and had already visited Tip Plus, S&M Bikes and Taco Beach, the first picture I'm gonna post is of Dennis right after I picked him up. We had left LAX and were rolling through El Segundo and guess what we found.

I'm getting ready for work, but I will say this. The iPhone is taking over the world. In our room the second night, of the 6 guys there 5 had iPhones although Bigs did have everyone beat on the future with his "push-button technology". It seems fitting that we ran into our boy Dustin (of InterBMX fame) and he has designed an app for your iPhone. It is a FREE ap and it links together all the BMX news, blogs and other relevent information into one basic button. No more waiting for pages to load on Safari. Here's an email from Jim Drake regarding the BMX side of the Off-road park at Sand Island. If you have the time, please come out and help.

"All BMX enthusiasts,

As promised, I said I would get out a few more details on our BMX racing track building this week. We’re looking for volunteers this weekend to help with the finishing of the track for Sandbox BMX out at Sand Island. Our track builder, Billy Allen, is arriving tomorrow from Colorado and should be complete on two full days of work on the track by this Saturday. We’re asking for volunteers to come out when you can with gloves and tools (shovels, rakes, brooms) to Sand Island starting at 7:30 AM until about 7:45 PM. I realize not everyone can make it, and not everyone has the stamina to last the entire day, but if you can make it at any time during the day, many hands make the work lighter. We’re all volunteers on this project, so anything you can add will be appreciated. The motorcycle guys have been putting in the lion’s share of the heavy equipment work up to this point. Now is our time to show our interest in this project and our ability to “generate a crowd.”

The Island BMX folks will do two shifts each day. Jason Chang will take the morning shift on Saturday, and I will take it on Sunday. Please introduce yourselves if we don’t know you. We’ll try to get as much water as possible out there for you, but since we obviously don’t know how many will show, don’t be afraid to contribute to the cause in this way as well. We’ll also try to set out some food each day around the middle of the day.

On Monday at 10:30 AM, there will be an official ground breaking with Government officials and media. Obviously we’re doing our best to get the word out about the track, and the park in General. Sand Island OHV has done an outstanding job of generating the publicity for this event. As many interested BMX folks that are available Monday would look good for the camera’s, especially since we will be the first track to open up. I expect the Grand Opening to be around October.

Directions to the Park is to take Sand Island Access Road over the bridge and take the first right at the light. You should be able to park in the parking area on the ocean side before the boat ramp. Thanks for your help and hopefully we’ll see you out there! Don’t hesitate to email if you have questions."

OK, to get everyone hyped up on helping out with building the track at Sand Island, I'll be hosting a showing of Joe Kid On A Stingray at the Waipio BIKEFACTORY this Saturday night, August 15th. This is also to test out my "theater" before our next event. I just confirmed that we get to do a premiere for Stompin' Stu (a documentary about Stu Thompson) on the 28th or 29th of this month. We'll try to have the grill going before 8:00pm and the movie should start at 8:30. I'm hoping that Jason Chang and/or Jim Drake will be there to give us a little bit of a heads up on the Sandbox. We will have coolers with ice for your beverages (BYOB 21 & Over!) If you're going to come out, and you know you should, comment back here and let us know what you're bringing. Bring a dish with some to spare and we can have a nice fun pot luck. If time permits, we can bring out the height poles for some bunnyhops. We might even do drag races and foot down.

I know that not all of our readers are focused on BMX Racing, but I think it's good for us all to come together and some love for the 20's . . . or 24's and 26's for you Cruisers and OM's.

OK, it looks like we're getting closer to having an actual BMX track on Oahu again. I've heard rumors about one in Kalihi as well but I know about one on Sand Island . . . would that be considered Kalihi? Anyway, the ABA is sending over one of their track builders to get the ball rolling on the 20th of next month. They'll need volunteers starting on the 22nd to do raking and basic smoothing of the track. Even if you don't race or have any plans to, I think it would be a good sign of solidarity in the Hawaii BMX community if you came down and helped out. They'll need a bunch of people that can bring shovels and/or rakes and who aren't afraid of a little hardwork. Please comment with your thoughts. Let us know if you're down.

Well . . . it's not the current Quintessentials. Les will be back in town for his honeymoon so we decided to play a reunion show on August 7th with some of the old members of the band. Hence the term "reunion". Jon and Dallas will be coming out as well as myself. We have False Crack, Pissfit, Dicks Of Doom and 2face4 coming out to play as well so it should be a fun night. The doors open at 8:00pm and the show starts at 9:00. We should be going on around 12:00 if everything goes right, which it never does. Come on out, drink some PBR, listen to some tunes and dance a little bit. It won't be as much fun without you.

It's rare that I get to brag about good Mexican food in Hawaii. Unfortunately, I just haven't had that much. Sure, there's La Taqueria in Fort Street Mall and El Palenque in Wahiawa. Both of those are really good. A new spot just opened up in Waipio next to Nancy's and I was impressed. The service was good, the food was really good and the whole ambience was perfect. A restaurant with unfinished walls, no hours in the window. A very proud owner/operator (think Baboo from Seinfeld) discussing the recipe of his homemade salsa. Yeah, I said homemade. Check it out, you'll like it . . . I did.

Alright guys, so from what I hear the BMX track is coming to fruition. After months and months . . . well, years of red tape it looks as though the green light has been given and the track should be materializing within a few weeks. Big Wave Dave is already talking smack about kicking everyones ass. I guess we'll have to put his bike back up on the roof. Anyways, here is a preliminary concept drawing. I like the row boat, it reminds me of the qualifiers from Rad!

The King Kamehameha Day Celebration / Hawaii Limited Edition LTF release party was a huge success!

"The headtube really does work!" - Big Island quoted on opening his beers.

The frame was on display for all to see and touch. The frame was illuminated under a brilliant (or should i say genius or Guinness) neon light.

The crowd* was treated to Guinness beer with no lines to wait in, a very VIP / exclusive event.

We have already gotten orders on-line and Ride BMX on-line mentioned the release. I'm sure they can't wait for the release party pics... crazy shit.

goin' back to cali... or maybe should i say drivin' way to much in cali. went out there for some x-games judges meeting.

i got in sunday morning via mai tai class upgrade, drove down to encinitas for a california burrito from juanitas. chilled with chris, and mike rooftop escamilla came by to get his twitter on.

chris came up to huntington with me to visit christian hosoi's sanctuary where we got to hear Jay Haizlip's sermon. fightin the good fight of faith.

then back down to san clemente to get our backyard surf encyclopedia knowledge on with chris moeller and melissa over some chilled beverages. back down to encinitas for another round of juanitas. back up to lax, trying to stay awake and already having to fill up the rental. the condor mat hoffman is cruzin up the the hotel too, just in time to pull up, pick me up and shoot up to the shamrock social club tattoo shop up in hollywood on sunset blvd. everyone was wrapping it up so we went to the rainbow room across the street where we ran into hoffman bikes team rider zack warden sitting there enjoying some tasty beverages. back to the hotel after a few, we get to the hotel lobby bar to see jimmy levan sitting there waiting for someone to drink a night cap with, we couldn't let him down. monday morning now, time for our meeting, which went by quick and with a lot of bad jokes, of course. it wouldn't be a bmx meeting of the minds without the bad jokes.

double double from in and out burger is what today is about. on to s and m bikes to pick up some samples of the soon to be released hawaii edition of the LTF. fuckin bad ass. june 11 we will have more details... get ready. sean mckinney! ran around more, stopped again for a double double. went to the hotel to pick up nate wessel and shot up to the roosevelt to hang pool side with rooftop and ryan dunn. next thing you know jason ellis, ken block, rob dyrdek, terry kennedy, Sal Masekela, and many others are pool side waiting for the rob dyrdek movie premier street dreams to show across the street at mann's chinese theater. i left to the shamrock to get tattooed. love it there.

I recently got back from Madison, Wisconsin where I was freezing my boys off. I was up there for a training seminar but that's besides the point. This flic has a lot of Hawaii in it and even more good riding. We're showing the video on the wall behind BIKEFACTORY at 7:30pm on Wednesday, November the 26th. Yes, you can all thank me. A couple of months back I did an interview with one of the local news papers regarding cycling as an alternate and viable mode of transportation for most people in Honolulu. When gas was hovering around $4.29, I said something to the effect of "we're never going to see a $3.00 gallon of gas again, it's only going to go higher." I guess the oil speculators heard about my comment and decided to make me look like an ass. Of course it is for the benefit all of us, except my quote was printed . . . and I do look like an ass.

I went and got gas for my truck tonight and was surprised when I saw this. Yep, $2.66 a gallon. Now I don't really feel that this is directly related to me but if I can facetiously take credit for something positive, why not?
