Streets 'Zine Fest!! Results

Thanks to everyone for coming out to our first Streets ‘Zine Fest. The turn out was decent with about 20 people showing up. Unfortunately, only 6 ‘Zines were turned in but that’s fine. I think it gave us more time to read through all the entries. I know that if I decide to do another ‘Zine Fest, there will definitely be more out there.
As for the entries this time we had “No Pressure D-Zines” by Zed, “07 Hawaii” by Lisa Ballard and Peter Adam, “The Zoo” by Oscar Watts, “Exil” by Cuyler Yogi, “The Lines On The Streets Lead To Zine” by Josue Escribano, and “Kitchen Sink” by me. Here are the winners for the Fest.

Most Informative – Kitchen Sink
Best Made-Up Mail Order – The Lines On The Streets Lead To Zine
Best Picture – The Zoo
Best Review – ’07 Hawaii
Best Interview – Tie – No Pressure D-Zines & Kitchen Sink
Best Overall – ’07 Hawaii

After the first round of voting, there were a couple of ties. After the second round of voting, there was still one tie but since the restaurant was closing we decided to end it there.
We need to thank the crew over at Tio’s for having us and allowing us to get rowdy over there. I’d like to thank Keith and all the crew at Ride BMX for helping out and sponsoring this little event. I’d also like to see Keith’s face when he finds out that the kid who won the years subscription lives in Ireland.

Scotty Powell - Interview

"Here is the interview from my 'Zine entry, Kitchen Sink. It was probably too long for a zine but fits right in here, which is where it was originally supposed to be" Socal.

Scotty Powell is part-owner of the Chenga Skateparks in Ohio, a world traveler, an awesome flatland rider and a good friend. From cliff jumping in Lake Mead to Philly Tits in Waikiki, you never know where you'll end up when you're out with him. He took some time to answer some questions for the Shootsbrah site...

1. How long have you been riding? 21-1/2 Years.
2. How does a self-professed "flatland" rider get involved with an indoor park? Because in 1995, winter was coming and we were over it. Something had to be done. We thought about it and were faced with 2 choices…1) Move to Arizona and ride all winter with Chase, Chad D, Trevor, Paul O, and others…or 2) Start our own skate park so that we could avoid the cold & snow of winter, and parking garages. We decided that we were gonna go for it, but on one condition that we promised ourselves…the park MUST have a flatland area! And we were off on our quest to find a building for our skate park!
3. How are things going at Chenga? Up and down. We just opened (moved the original park) and due to about 50 circumstances that were way out of our control, we officially opened Chenga 57 at the worst possible time of year for a park. We have been building steadily and now that winter is just starting I think we will be fine!
4. Where did the term/name Chenga come from? What do you mean!? ( Ed. Note. Scotty and I have talked about this. It turns out that at about the age fifteen, they just started using different made-up words. It turned into the Chenga Boys and there you have it.)
5. You and Kevin (Jones) were part owners of Dividual. What happened with that? The frame builder (located in Oceanside, Ca.) was offered a job from Subway (sandwiches) to build chip racks for their shops. Since it was way easier to do and made a ton more cash, he decided to quit making frames for all of his clients. Then Kevin and I decided that since the business took a bunch of time and really never amounted to any substantial cash flow (and we had the frames we wanted for ourselves), that we would be better off just ending it. We did so at a point in time when we were almost sold out of everything that we made too!
6. What are you riding now? I had the same frame builder make me 2 custom frames, a slight bit different than the ones we sold. I have a chrome bike (with front and back brakes) and the Van Halen bike with front brake only!
7. You travel quite a bit. What has been your favorite destination? I try to have fun and enjoy my trips no matter where I go…well, doesn't everyone!? Anyways, I can think of many different aspects of many of my trips that I hold dear…for example:
La Jolla,Ca. Sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the crashing waves. Sea lions were below me barking away as I stood looking down on them and around. All around were like 40 pelicans swirling around me.
Off the cut, Panama walking along a virgin beach for about an hour, looking around and noticing that I was totally alone in this paradise, no job, no pressure, no worries, nobody!
Manual Antonio, Costa Rica. Having the monkeys eating right out of my hand! Literally!
Hanauma Bay, Oahu. Chill with a sea turtle. For about 10 minutes just me and the turtle chilled together. Once he became bored, he left!
Volcano Park, Hawaii. Going out to see the lava flow into the ocean; at one point Nate (Wessell) and I looked down and looked through the cracks in the ground, realizing that we were standing about 10 feet above flowing lava!!
I have tons more, but you didn't look at this to read a book!

8. You just got involved with a new endeavor. What's up with Chenga Travel? My aunt has been a travel agent for 20+ years, so I know a bit about that business. And with the internet heavily involved with the evolution of travel, she helped me create my own travel site! Since I know (from riding) sooooo many people and all they do is travel all year round it made perfect sense to start a site where riders could book their travel! Not only can you book air tickets but hotels, car rentals, cruises, golf trips, special event tickets, and flowers too on the site. It works really well and is simple to use! Why give Expedia your money when you can support someone in the riding scene!!??
Also...there are awesome opportunities for anyone else to start their own travel site too. Just email me and let me know if you are interested in a 2nd source of income! www.chengatravel.com

9. Any last words? I'll be seeing everyone in Hawaii real soon and if you are on the mainland, look me up! Shooooooots!

Streets Zine Fest!! Rules & Stuffs.

Alright laddies, here it is. Remember, this is an event to have fun and showcase your creativity. Use it! and now, the official rules.
1. You have to have a title. Your 'Zine does not necessarily have to be BMX related.
2. 'Zines will be made up of two 8-1/2"x11" sheets folded and stapled giving you eight 4-1/4"x5-1/2" pages including cover and back cover.
3. You must include some sort of interview. Other than yourself, it doesn't matter who it is.
4. You must include a review. Again, I don't care what it's of (i.e. movie, band, bike part, place to watch the sunset), but it has to be a legitimate review.
5. No plagiarism. All articles must be your own and current.
6. We will meet up at Tio's Garage and Taco Station (formerly Dixie Grill) at 8:00pm on Sunday, November 18th. The address is 404 Ward Ave. Bring ten copies of your finished 'Zine.
7. Although you may work with others, this is not a team project.
8. Keep the Shit Talking to a minimum!

We will have self-judging for bragging rights in the following categories . . .
*Best Overall 'Zine
*Best Interview
*Best Review
*Best Picture
*Best "Made-Up Mail Order - Optional (No Sex Toys!)

Try and take all pictures and conduct the interview yourself. This is not supposed to be a vehicle to toot your own horn, although if you can . . .

Remember, this is just a 'Zine. There is nothing you can do wrong. Talk about something you care about and it will be good.

Give me a heads up at www.myspace.com/streetsofmadness and let me know if you are entering. If nothing else, it's going to be fun. Let me know if you're just going to come out and hang out also.

Thanks go out to www.shootsbrah.com, Ride BMX Magazine, Black Lightning Clothing and Tio's Garage for their support.

Socal

Streets 'Zine Fest!! Coming up!

We’ve decided to try and get some of you monkeys to be creative. Yes, we are holding the Streets ‘Zine Fest. I know that all of you know what a ‘Zine is. I know that all of you have something to say and I want to read it all. Basically, the rules are going to be no teams. You can work with someone else, however I want different ‘Zines from everyone. They’ll have to be 8 half-sheets (2 pcs of 8-1/2x11 folded in half, double sided) long and have a production run of 10 copies. That way, everyone will be able to read them. You will have 1 week to do the ‘Zine which should be plenty, this is only a ‘Zine. I’m trying to give everyone a heads up on what’s going on. The actual time frame begins next Sunday. I will post the rest of the rules on November 11th. The get-together and readings will be held at a yet-to-be-disclosed location and time, although it will be on November 18th. If you have any questions, other than the specific rules, just let me know. Check out www.myspace.com/streetsofmadness.

It's the Bees!

Do you remember the Bees skit from the early Eddie Roman videos? Where ever they went they seemed to be chased by these Bees. I've never seen any Bees this determined. And you don't typically associate Bees with downtown Honolulu. Believe me when I tell you that they're here. My boy Jase K said he was stung like 9 times within 2 years. And now I, minding my own business out with a customer, get stung by a frickin' Bee. My only solace is that this bee will hopefully die! I'm not a fan of Bees. I'll leave you with this pic to take my mind off the little fucker that got me.

"F This S"!!

The premiere was this past Sunday. I haven't written about it until now because I have been drunk. Steinlager hooked us up with beer specials and I still ended up with a $100.00 tab. Regardless, the video was awesome. Cuyler got in the video with 2 clips. 3 if you count the crash in the bonus section. 50 some-odd people showed up and if I get pictures, we'll have some of those posted soon. I know we're still waiting for some from 'Vegas. It'll happen soon enough. Loads of thanks to Black Lightning for the Fitteds and shirts. Check them out!

The Tuff-Guys

The Shoots Brah Crew ("Big Island" Mike, Dennis, Duane, Cuyler, "Shogun" Logan and "Scoots Baluts" Scott) was in force in Las Vegas this past week. We were there for the Interbike trade show to see all the new stuffs and party a lil' bit.
The NORA cup awards went down on Thursday, (Aaron Ross - Best Street, Jamie Bestwick - Vert, Matthias Dandois - Flatland, Corey Bohan - Dirt, Ruben Alcantara - Video Part, and Kyle Bennett - BMX). The show was pretty good and finished up with Mini-Kiss, an all midget (sorry . . . I mean little people) Kiss tribute band.
First, however, there was a deal commemerating the Skyway team from 1987 with an emphasis on the Tuff Wheel. All the bad asses from the team were there including Mattt Hoffman, Maurice "Drob" Meyer, Hugo @ Oscar Gonzalez, Rhino, Scotty Freeman, Eddie Roman plus other other notable Tuff Wheel users and Old-Schoolers Pete Augustin, Brian Blyther, Xavier Mendes, Dave Voelker and more that I probably forgot. Check out www.bmxonline.com and www.jtfreestyle.com for more info and pictures. We'll also post a couple more of our own pictures here when we have time.
There's so many good stories that we'll be bringing to ya!

I'm not sure why this made us laugh but it did. I've been told that we should take pictures a lot on this trip and one night while going to a bar in Gardena, we found this one. For those of you who don't know our friend Marty, this probably won't make sense but it as hell did to Dennis and me. He's a consumate joker with an odd humor. Marty asked if I was able to post from the mainland and here's my answer. We love you Marty.

Dennis & Keiko, sittin' in a tree . . .

As you all know, Dennis and Keiko are man and wife. So we had a little get together over at Wally's place to celebrate a bit. Of course, we don't really need a specific reason or place to celebrate but these two worked out well enough. We drank champagne and beer, ate BBQ and baby quiche, actually had a speech that made me cry, and even a small-kine break battle. All in all I guess you could say we had a good time. Here are a couple of photos from the festivities. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

NORA Cup in Las Vegas

What: Each year the pros in our sport vote for the Number One Rider in each of the following categories: street, ramp, dirt, flat, race, and best video part. At the huge party, the award winners are presented a big, shiny cup and a year's worth of bragging rights. There is an open bar, special guests, and lots of other entertainment lined up. Basically this is the biggest party in BMX and you need to be there.
Who: NORA cup is open to the public, but since the party is in a bar in a casino, it is a 21 and over event. Everyone who is anyone in BMX will be there—industry professionals and riders alike. TJ Lavin will be the host of the awards and there will be several historic and influential presenters, so get ready for a great show. After the awards are handed out there will be a special performance by Mini Kiss, a Kiss cover band comprised entirely of "little people"!

When: Thursday, September 27, 2007. This is the 2nd night of Interbike. There is an open bar from 8 to 10pm, followed by the awards show. The party ends when it ends...and in Vegas, the party never ends!
Where: "The Joint" inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. 4455 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nevada 89169

"F This S" BMX DVD Premiere - Tell your friends!

I actually just confirmed Sunday, October 7th at 8:00pm at the Hard Rock Cafe for the premiere of "F This S". Brian Purdy came down to Hawaii with Rob Wise, Allan Cooke, Adam Banton and Anthony Cico to film for this video. Now don't get me wrong, there were more guys and they filmed all over the mainland. I've seen some of the clips and this one's gonna be fun to watch. As per usual, there is no cover at the Hard Rock Cafe. All I can do is ask that you come down and show some patronage. Holla if you have any questions.

We'd like to welcome a new member to the Shoots Brah family. Dennis and long time girlfriend Keiko made the jump and got married. We all wish them the best of luck as they enter their new life together . . . although nothings' really changed. They were already living together for like two years. Sleepless in Seattle . . . ha!

Fuck! Seattle, Tacoma and the Greater Northwest has so much shit going on. Not only is there a gang of "friendly" parks & hidden trails, but there always seems to be something going on. I guess there has to be considering it doesn't get dark until 9:30 at night.
Our trip started because of three big deals. My favorite band Rush was playing in Auburn, our boy Scott lives in Tacoma, and there is a Del Taco in Federal Way so it was on.
Melinda and I flew into Sea/Tac on Air Force One (not really, it was at the Museum of Flight) and headed straight to the Del Taco. And there are a bunch of other interesting things to do here as well. We did go and check out the aforementioned Museum of Flight, the Experience Music Project and even looked for the Cylon in the Sci-Fi Museum next door.

We gambled at a casino on the Muckleshoots Indian reservation. $3.00 for a pint of Fat Tire Ale and only lost $15.00 in the slots. Not bad. They even had the R&B greats Notorious 253 playing live.
We drove over to Woodinville to see the Red Hook Brewery. The tour guide didn't like my Laverne & Shirley joke . . . at all.

We drove down to Portland and cruised on the other side of the Burnside bridge. We ended up having dinner with my old bassist Jerod, then cruised over to Gypsy's to shoot pool. Ryan Barrett shows up and as it turns out, the kid's a shark. Seriously.

When we got back to Seattle, we went to Pike Place Market and I got to meet Scott's buddy Ben. He's one of the guys that throws fish. He also scares the fuck out of guys from Hawaii with a Monk fish. I even met Jasper from Springfield at the Kwik-E-Mart.

If you get the chance to visit the Northwest, do it. You will most likely have fun. Let us know and we'll set you up with some cool guys . . . maybe.
Try some Rein Deer (Rainier Beer), if you drink enough you might be able to see the actual mountain. I drank a bit but never saw the elusive mountain other than on everyones' license plate.
Oh yeah, the concert was awesome.
